This file contains helpful information about Corel Painter IX.

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR USERS WHO HAVE PREVIOUSLY INSTALLED A VERSION OF COREL PAINTER IX:

As Corel Painter IX.5 provides additional features, it is highly recommended that you reset your user settings after installing Corel Painter IX.5 or Corel Painter IX.5 Update. Please note that you may encounter random instabilities if you do not reset your user settings.

To reset your user settings to the factory default, hold down the Shift key while starting the application. A prompt will appear asking you to confirm that you want to restore the default settings. Click Yes. Please note that your customized user settings will be lost as a result.

QuickTime(R) and Adobe(R) Acrobat(R) Reader are required for components of Corel Painter IX.

The Corel Painter IX Help system requires a web browser and is optimized for the Safari(TM) web browser on the Macintosh and Microsoft(R) Internet Explorer 6 on Windows.

Installation

Older versions of Corel Painter

Corel does not recommend installing Corel Painter IX over an older version. Install to a new folder.

Before installing Corel Painter IX

Before you install Corel Painter IX, you must close all other applications, including virus detection programs. If other applications are running, they may interfere with the installation process. On Windows, open applications are displayed on the taskbar. On the Mac OS, in the Dock, a small, black triangle displays below the icons of open applications.

Installation on Macintosh

Installing Corel Painter IX to a UNIX(R) partition on a Macintosh computer is not supported.

Serial Number

In order to install Corel Painter IX, you need the Corel Painter IX serial number, unless you are using a trial version. Please keep this serial number in a safe place in case you need to re-install Corel Painter IX or you need to call Corel Support Services. For Activated Trials, you will also need to note down your activation code.

Trial Versions

Before launching a Trial version in a non-administrator account, the Corel Painter IX application must be launched as an administrator.

Corel Painter IX Technical Information

Brushes

- Sharing of brushes - If you create a custom brush variant and wish to share it with other users, you must provide the associated .xml file. For example, to share the Pencil variant, you need to provide users with the Pencil.xml file. If you want to share a custom brush category, you need to provide the brush category folder along with the associated .jpg file and brush variant .xml files. For example, with the Pencil brush category, you need to provide the pencil.jpg , the \Pencil folder, and the associated pencil.xml brush variant files contained in the folder.

- Brush Preview - If a brush preview cannot be generated in less than 15 seconds in the Brush Creator, a red X will appear on the preview pane.

Digital Watercolor

- Images with wet digital watercolor don't open correctly in previous versions of Corel Painter. You will need to dry the wet digital watercolor layers prior to opening the associated files in previous versions of Corel Painter.

- Digital Watercolor must be dried before applying Effects.

- It is recommended that you use wet digital watercolor when you are painting and dry them when you want to perform other functions from within Corel Painter IX.

- When saving to the PSD file format, Corel Painter both dries the Digital Watercolor and converts Gel layers to use the “Darken” composite mode. While this works relatively well on images with a light background, you may achieve better results by changing the blending mode to “Multiply” in Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) for images with a dark background.

KPT(R) Filters (Windows only)

- To use the bundled KPT plug-in filters on a non-Administrator account , you will need to first launch one of the filters in an Administrator account.

- The KPT(R) Goo(TM) plug-in filter will only work in an Administrator account.

Content

- To open a Painter.Settings file (Painter.set on Windows) from previous versions of Corel Painter in Gradients, Weaves, Looks, and Lighting, you need to use the associated Mover rather than the Open Library function.

Custom Key sets

- Custom key sets cannot be shared between the Windows and Macintosh platforms.

File Filters

- In order to import and export QuickTime files, you must have QuickTime installed on your computer.

- Corel Painter IX only supports Adobe(R) Illustrator(R) 8 files. If you are using a later version of Adobe Illustrator, save your file as an Adobe Illustrator 8 file before importing it into Corel Painter IX.

- Corel Painter IX does not support Adobe(R) Photoshop(R) files with layer effects. If you have a layer effect in your Adobe Photoshop file, it is recommended that you drop the layer effect to the canvas before opening it in Corel Painter IX.

- Corel Painter IX does not support TIFF files with LZW compression.

Welcome Screen

- The links in the Welcome Screen spotlighting various artists were working at time of testing, however websites sometimes go down and this is beyond our control.

- QuickTime must be installed in order to view lynda.com training videos.

Text

- Corel Painter IX supports Open Type Fonts on Mac OS X only.

Corel(R) Photo Album(TM) & Corel(R) Paint Shop Pro(R)

- Open pspimage file and Corel Photo Album support is only available on windows version.

User Interface

- Corel Painter IX is optimized for Small Font Display on Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Globalization (Windows only)

Corel Painter IX is not a Unicode application. When Corel Painter is installed on a Windows operating system that has the English Multilingual Language Pack, you need to change the system's Regional settings for the application to operate correctly when you change the language of the operating system. This is especially important if the language you are using has double byte characters such as Japanese. You need to switch the locale in the Regional Setting to the language you are currently working in by following the steps below:

Windows XP:

1. Click Start, Control Panel, Regional and Language Options.

2. Choose the Advanced tab.

3. Choose Japanese from the Language for non-Unicode programs list box.

Windows 2000:

1. Click Start, Control Panel, Regional and Language Options.

2. Click the Set Default button.

3. Choose Japanese from the list box.

Notes:

- If you are on a native language operating system such as Japanese Windows 2000, you should not need to change your regional settings as they would have defaulted to the native language of the OS.

- Corel Painter IX English does not support Latin extended characters on Japanese operating systems.
